halloween day

Hi dears:
As you know halloween day is near, but I don t know how to celebrate it.
Currently, I am working in a small village, the school has got only 30 students from 3 to 12 years old. I would like to make any work with all of them. Could you give me any idea? Thank you in advance. |

Hi,
Just a short word of advice: find out how Halloween has been celebrated in the past at that school. You never know when someone will get upset. For example, we can no longer use ghosts, witches, or basically anything but pumpkins and cats.
Good luck,
Carla

Yeah Carla we know America has become a land of anal retentatives with non-teachers having more say so on what goes on in the classrooms than teachers. Oh and I love how the far-Right are the one that ban it and then blame the Democrats and left in the political area. Yet still to this day most teachers won t say or do anything about it. Why the education is failing, yet still wants to telll everyone else they are doing it wrong.
piedadrolsell there was good advice... and links. Check what the school and area has done. I would also look up for similar holidays. History of Halloween on the History Channel can also help figure similar holidays. Like pieces of Thanksgiving, Winter Solistics, harvest festivals, Day of the Dead, and more. It all depends on how you want to do it. It can be a quick short lesson or expand into other subject areas on Cultural, Social Studies, Art, Science, Language Arts, and of course English. Most focus on the monsters and scary stories of modern day Halloween but it is more than that. |

Carve a pumpkin (see my new lesson)
Carla-
You are so right- we are not allowed to do anything anymore. My daughter (5th grade) has not ever had the chance to dress up in school and walk in parades...40+ (not to reveal my age too much!) we used to parade around the school and have the parents come and take pictures. When I taught lower grades, the kids used to "trick-or-treat- in other classrooms.
It is so hard to be so "politically correct"- we have "winter parties" instead of holiday ones, etc. A few years ago, I had both a Christmas Tree and Menorah in my class. I think that as long as you have a unit on all religions, everyone can enjoy the holidays....
(really, who sees Halloween as a Christian holiday anymore? I think the meaning was lost a long time ago when all the blood and gore was introduced...just more money spent at stores and for dental bills!) |

I teach the students (age 11-12) about Halloween as a part of the American culture which started in Ireland/Scotland... But we don t celebrate Halloween cause it is not a part og our history and culture, even though all the shops try to tell us that Halloween is soon and we should buy a lot of stuff from them for this celebration. I also tell the students about Thanksgiving, Valentines day, Groundhogday ..., but we celebrate our own holidays like christmas, easter, 17th May, Midsummer ... |
