I ´m in need of urgent help:(

Hi everyone!

I am about the teach my students past simple and past con. using in the same sentence.. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the following sentences:

When I was having shower, the telephone rang.
While I was having shower, the telephone rang.

(the book that I ´m using gives all the examples like the first one)

thanks in advance:)

Hello
Actually the first sentence is not correct because the verb that follows when must be in the simple past and the second one is in the past continuous. The action that follows "when" is short while the other one takes time. Therefor the action must be in the SP not in PC.

hi,
as far as ı know we use simple past tense after using "when" and we use past continious tense after using "while"

for example:

when the telephone rang, ı was having shower
or
while ı was having shower, the telephone rang.

those are the correct usages and both of them have the same meaning you can compare it with Turkish meanings of the sentances, it will be better for you to clarify the meaning

Hi!Smile

Sometimes we use «while to  enhance the idea that we managed to do  something just thanks  to some other action:

While I was searching for a book in my room I found 5$ under my bed.

If I𠍿 not mistaken in this case we can use just WHILE+ GERUND

While searching for the book I found 5$.

Oh! I think we CAN use SIMPLE after WHILE, can´t we?

The first sentence can be correct, but I usually introduce the difference with the rule:
while + past continuous:  While I was having a shower, the telephone rang
when + past simple: I was having a shower when the phone rang
Hope it can help you!!!Smile

Both are fine to me!!!

Basically I tell my students to use ´while when the two actions are independent of each other, means it don ´t affect one another.

Eg. While I was playing outside, my father was painting the house.

So the actions don ´t interfere with each other.

However, if it does, then I ask them to use ´when for the FIRST action.

Eg.

When I was going to school, I met with my old English teacher.

So here the first action will come to a halt when the second action starts.

An alternative would be

I met my old English teacher while I was going to school.

Hope it helps

Love
Fsams
