Thanks very much for your numerous answers :-) This helps a lot! No matter what we call "it" it is lots of fun anyway!!! Btw it �s bitingly cold here in the Alps ... brrr and enough snow to go sledding the whole winter ;-)

 My two cents worth:
 
rodeln-- is the professional sport type sledding (as Ladybird said).
 
schlitten fahren - is everyday sledding (US English--I had never heard the word sledging until today)
 
a tobogan is a special type of sled--you can go toboganning with these
 
a sleigh- is a very large sled, usually pulled by horses.
