Happy St George ´s and St Jordi ´s Day!

Almaz, please tell us more about this tradition, if you have the time. It sounds really beautiful... Exchanging books and roses is not a tradition you get to hear about very often!

Saint George - São Jorge - is not Rio ´s Patron saint, which is Saint Sebastian, but he is our most celebrated saint.  April 23  is a holiday (no work- no school) in his honour and the celebrations start at 4am with a horn wake up call, fireworks and a mass attended by thousands of people.
This year, however, because the date coincides with Holy Saturday, the catholic church has asked the people to postpone the celebrations for Sunday.  Most people didn ´t.  There was no special mass but the church remained open all through the night receiving people wearing white or red, the colours of São Jorge.

As far as the Catalan celebration is concerned, the rose has been associated with this day for centuries, while the literary aspect is relatively recent (apparently, an enterprising Catalan bookseller in the 1920 ´s noted that both Cervantes and Shakespeare died on the 23rd of April). Traditionally, men buy roses for their women and women buy books for their men - but nowadays there ´s more of a mutual exchange of both.

For the record, I bought my wife a single blood-red rose and a copy of Javier Cercas ´ ´Soldiers of Salamis ´. She gave me a little ceramic rose magnet and ´Cathedral of the Sea ´ by Ildefonso Falcones.

Dear Anna:
In Argentina we have a similar celebration as the one you are describing. On August 7th we celebrate Saint Cajetan day. Saint Cajetan is the patron of all workers. Hundreds of people set their tents outsie Saint Cajetan Church sometimes a week before and the celebration starts at 12 pm.
