Adding lines

Hi there

Simple question - hopefully simple answer

Am making templates and adding lines after each question where students write their answer.

Usually I just use the underscore and hold it to the end but am wondering is there a shortcut where you simply press one key and it will add/draw a line to the margin for you.

If I do it my way, and I want to amend the question, I have to amend the line length too.  Really, I m just looking for something auto that will add/amend the line to the right length for me.

Fingers crossed ...

Cheers

Don t know about an automatic line, tho you can add a right-justified tab at the right side of the page, then tab from the end of your question to your tab and put in your underscores - will still have to amend line length tho, but the ends of the lines will always line up on the right hand side.  Not sure if that helps... Good luck!

Sorry, now I think I understand your question.

go to the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group click Shapes and choose the Line option. Then click and draw the line wherever you want in your doc. Hold the Shift key while dragging to lock the line to a horizontal position. Once it s on the page, with the line selected you can use the Format tab on the ribbon to do all sorts of things to it...like applying Styles.

Another way is go to the Page Layout tab and in the Page Background group click Page Borders. Then at the bottom of the Borders and Shading dialogue, click the Horizontal Line button.
In the Horizontal Line dialogue you can scroll through everything from plain lines to some really wild and crazy ones. Once you choose one click Okay, and it s in your word document...you can always modify by double-clicking the line and make your changes in the Format Horizontal Line dialogue box that opens. You can also use the handles that appear when the line is selected to resize the lines.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your super prompt replies but I think that there is no simple solution to my question even though there are trillions of teachers all over the world who would love a simple solution to this painstaking task.

All I want to do is insert this _____________________

to the end of the page (right margin) with just one simple click of a button, which then auto-adjusts the length if I happen to change the wording of the question.

EX:

1. What is the title? ____________________________

2. Who is the author? ___________________________

2. When did they write it? _______________________

etc

Is there a way?

Fingers crossed ...

Cheers

I don t think there s one simple click of a button, but here s a trick

Insert the lines first

Write your questions

Just an idea.

It isn t efficient, but it does look nice. What I do is insert a table with three columns. The first column I use for the numbers, so I move the divider all the way to the left. I write my questions in the second column. The third column is left for answer lines. I remove the outside lines and the lines for the first two columns. I put back the bottom line for the third column last question. I usually move the dividing line between columns two and three to the end of the question.

Sophia s solution seems just perfect to me...

It is fast and you can change the margin easily by dragging the tab stop.
It is one simple click of a button, which then auto-adjusts the length if Jayho happens to change the wording of the question. :-D Exactly what Jayho needs, IMHO.

That s it, hallelujah  - thanks so much Sophia - that makes the task so much less time consuming.

My new word for the day: tab leader

The best thing about today so far (and it s only 7am) - is learning about another labour saving device.

Thanks to everyone who shared their suggestions with me.

Have a fantabulous day
