how much/ what does it cost?

I have just come across the question: "What does it cost" in the textbook that I use with my students. I wonder whether the enquiry is grammatically correct as I would more naturally ask "How much does it cost". Are there any differences between those two questions?

"What does it cost?" is definitely more formal. Both are correct.
You can also ask, "How much is it?"
