A few problems with “ch”

1) check (=verify) – cheque (money) – Czech (from the Czech Republic)

In North America, cheque is usually spelt check.

Could you please __________ if the ___________ man has already paid in the _____________?

2) French words used in English usually retain the “sh” pronunciation of the letters “ch”.

chic, champagne, chaise longue, chalet, chandelier, chaperone, chauffeur …

She is chic but cheeky!

That chap is my chaperone.

The champions drank champagne.

The chalet is quite chilly.

There are three chairs and a chaise longue in the living room.

3) All words in English which begin with chl- or chr- are derived from Greek and are pronounced “k”.

chlorine, chlorophyll …

chromium, chrome, Christian, Christmas, chrysalis …

4) Some “ch” words which are derived from Greek are pronounced “k”.

chameleon, chaos, character, choir, choreographer, chemistry …

Examples:

I wrote a cheque to pay the chauffeur.

Christmas is always chaotic in my house!

In chemistry we’re learning about chlorine and chromium.

The Czech choir are staying in a chic chalet.

The choreographer bought a chrome chandelier.
