Variation vs variant

Dear colleagues,

Ive always wondered if different versions of the same test (say, the test on some grammar and vocabulary) are VARIANTS of this test or, rather, VARIATIONS? Supposing youve decided to give some of your students Test A and the others, thus, are going to be given Test B. Both are, for example, are based on the materials of Unit 1. So, do we call Tests A and B variants of the Unit 1 Test or do we call them variations? Is there a major difference? Im a bit puzzled ...

Hi Niksailor, I would call the test an alternate version (or a second version). Variant to me fits better to a virus, etc. like a mutation. Variation fits to a musical or literary piece. There are many variations of Cinderella.

Thank you for your clarification, dear redcamarocruiser.
Ill bear that in mind.
