because and as - help

because and as - help

how can I explain the difference between because and as. like:
I went to bed because I was tired - I went to bed as I was tired.

I know they are not always interchangeable but when aren t they? what s the difference?
Thanks

Because is used when the focus is on the reason as the most important part of the sentence whereas as is used when the reason is already well known and/or  less important.  For this reason, because clauses come at the end of sentences; as clauses more often come at the beginning.
e.g.As

Sorry - was leaning on keyboard!

e.g. As I m really tired, I m going to bed now (focus on I m going to bed now).
as opposed to:  I m going to bed now because I m really tired (focus on I m really tired).
Any help?

Ballycastle1 s answer looks right to me.

I d just like to add that I think "as" may be more common in the UK than in the US.
