HELP please :(

I �m studying syntax and have to hand this assignment tomorrow morning ( 12 hours from now)

please help me I need to draw a tree diagram of a sentence

but i �m confused, I don �t know what to do with the possessive (- �s)

here �s the sentence

The old hag �s hat was stolen

all I know so far is :

The old hag �s hat was stolen

S ---> NP VP

The old hag �s hat ....

NP ---> Det adj.p ..... ? ( hag �s hat is supposed to be ... what ? Noun maybe ? another NP ? I don �t know :( )

was stolen

VP ---> Vgp

was stolen

Vgp ---> Aux V

was

Aux ---> Tense passive

and the tense is {past}

please help me :(

how can I include ( hag �s hat ) to the tree ???

Hi,

I may not use the abbreviations you need, but I can tell you the parts of speech for each word.

The = adj. (Also called an article or determiner)

old = adj.

hag �s = possessive adj.

hat = noun/subject

was = helping verb in verb phrase (aux. verb)

stolen = main verb of verb phrase

Hi there,

Hat= S

When drawing a tree and as the words the/old/ hag �s are part of the subject of this sentence they should be written below the word hat (one line each) keeping the word hag and the possessive �s together (hag �s). The word hag is a noun acting as an adjective (= adjectival).

Hi! The answers are correct. I only add that hag�s is a premodifier to the main noun hat.
