							| The first variant is correct, unless Riverdale is an official name of the place, like Oklahoma City. Since there are two New Yorks (state and city), it is possible to say New York City and the City of New York. I guess this must be the explanation. |  14 Feb 2010

							| In the first sentence - the word city is not capitalized because it is not part of the name. In the second sentence - City is part of the name of the town.
