							| HELP!! Tenses analysis
 |
							| Hey, sorry to be a pain, but I am just planning my lesson and I have to clarify to an E1 class why we use the ing form and the base form for the following sentences
I can swim - base form
I can t play football - base form

I am good at swimming - ing form
I like dancing - ing form
I would like to go dancing - ing form

I know it is to do with the tenses, but this is my weak point :-(
Any help would be very much appreciated.   Thanks Refis24 | 20 Feb 2010

							| I can swim - base form I can t play football - base
form

Can is a modal verb (like will, would, might, must, should, could). We always use the base form of the verb after modal verbs.

I am good at swimming - ing form
 I like dancing - ing
form
I would like to go dancing - ing form

These are all examples of the gerund - this is an -ing form used as a noun. (It s different from, for example, I am dancing, which is the -ing form as the present participle of the verb).

							| I think it s China where if you save someone s life you re responsible for them forever. I apply the same principles to TEFL! | 21 Feb 2010
