 |
							| Dear colleagues, which of the following two options would you say is correct? Do you think both can be accepted?   "I ve got a car" 1) She said she had got a car. 2) She said she had a car. Thank you in advance | 14 Mar 2010

							| 1. She said she had got a car sounds like she either bought or borrowed a car. 2. She said she had a car sounds like she has one already.

							| If you want to hold the meaning of the sentence "I have got a car" in reported speech, you should say "She said she had a car", because we use "have got" only in present simple verb form. | 14 Mar 2010

number one:  She said she has a car             Meaning she has a car now.  (Present)
number two:  She said she had a car             Meaning she did have a car.  (Past) REDBULL GIVES YOU WINGS YOU KNOW | 14 Mar 2010

							| I ll have to agree with Libertybelle and, consequently, with banska bystrica. If you want to keep the meaning of the sentence, choose answer (2). Cheers! | 14 Mar 2010

							| If it was correct and the reported speech was about the woman not having a car anymore, it would be:
WOMAN: I had a car (but not anymore)
REPORTED: She said she had had a car.

In the sentence "She said she had a car", in correct grammar means she said she has one, in Direct Speech.

Banska explanation of HAVE GOT only having a present form is correct.
The right option would be n 2, in my opinion.

							| I agree with Banska and Liberty answer.
I don t think Redbull s examples and explanation are 100% correct.  In reported speech, it should be:

 1. She always says "I have a car" => She always says she HAS a car (the first verb is in present simple form so the second verb remains its tense in direct speech)

 2. She said "I have a car" => She said she HAD a car (the first verb is now in past simple form).
