							| When I was at school I learnt that "a quarter past" is how you say it. But today I know that both options are possible, so you can say either 1-  The game starts at a quarter to nine.
or  2-  The game starts at quarter to nine.    | 15 Mar 2010

							| both are okay, but for beginner students it is better to stick with a quarter. less confusing, I suppose. | 15 Mar 2010

							| I think that "a quarter" is the only officially correct form, but it is very common for people to say it without "a", so that has become an accepted form.   Bruce | 15 Mar 2010

							| This is a British/American English thing.
 The English never use a.

The film starts at quarter to nine.

 The Americans use a.

The film starts at a quarter to nine.

If you usually teach British English, leave out the a .
If you usually teach American English, use the a !!
