							| hello dear teachers I have recently downloaded a worksheet about expressing surprise  i found this type of sentences : how ugly is the alien !                                                   how pretty is she !    but I know that it should be : how ugly the alien is !                                                 how pretty she is !                                                  how noisy the town is ! please tell me which is correct ?  thanks  |  25 Mar 2010

							| You �re right! To be honest though I think it �s a little old fashioned and it �s enough for students to use the much simpler phrases: 
 Wow! The alien is ugly!

I agree with RabbitWho - it �s not worthwhile teaching structures such as:          How beautiful she is.   Because they are simply not used (except maybe in old context, such as the film Gone with the Wind).  It �s really not english in use now.          Wow! That alien is ugly!     Would be better to express surprise   The structure:        I can�t believe how ugly the alien is!   is used but not so much for the immediate expression of surprise.   |  25 Mar 2010

							| Yep, they �re rather dated I agree. 
 How about "boy, is she ugly!" or " **** crap, she �s ugly" though best not to use that one!

 I �m amazed at how many Ss don �t know that you can use "so" to emphasise a characteristic
