If the template is a picture (which they often are), then use Insert - Text boxes or Word Art, or you can right-click and choose Add text.

I know the feeling. Unfortuanately some templates are not reusable because the boxes cannot be either written in or used to contain images. And ther �s nothing you can do about it except insert your own. People sending templates should use a text zone and make a fresh one instead of copying the first. However there are a lot of usable ones.
