							| The use of the word "GAIN"
 |
							| Once again I ask for your help. As far as I know people earn money by their work or win money on the lottery. But yesterday one student handed in a composition writing the following sentence: He gained a lot of money. He told me that he entered one of those webpages on wich you can bet your money and he read "gain money".  I know we gain experience or knowledge but I have never known how to use this word properly, or the contexts or reasons why we have to use this word. Most of my workmates just tell me to say it is a matter of collocation, but I hate giving these kind of answers. Could you please help me? Thanks a lot in advanced. | 28 May 2010

							| Hi friend! As we know, the meaning of gain is to obtain or win something especially sth that we need or want, eg, entrance, access to sth, to obtain a benefit from sth, get more, eg; to gain weight, experience. In the case of profit, the word is commonly used with a negative connotation, eg; financial profit. Have a look at this example It s amazing what some people will do FOR GAIN It s definitely a matter of collocation.   I hope you can give your students a better answer now. A hug! | 28 May 2010

							| Yes, you can gain money so it would depend on the context of your student s composition. It would mean that you didn t earn it. Maybe you won / inherited or even stole it! | 28 May 2010
