what does "his" refer to in the paragraph?

Can you help me please? I feel confused. As an answer to the question "what does (his) refer to?", should we write (physician) or (physician �s)?

[I have known my physician for years. (...) I threw down my packet of cigarettes right in his chamber�s dustbin.]

"His" refers to him, right?

"...right into the physician �s chamber �s dustbin". Since "his" is possessive, the noun it replaces must be possessive.

If you wanted to rewrite the sentence, it would read:

�I have known my physician for years. (...) I threw down my packet of cigarettes right in my physician �s chamber �s dustbin. �

His - refers to the speaker �s physician.

In the case you want to avoid repetitive word, your first sentence is correct . I agree with yanogator �s explanation ;)
