							| conversation before grammar or vice versa!

							| Dear teachers.Imagine you are teaching a lesson of let s say,Interchange book series(By Mr.Richards). In the units of this book, the conversation part always precedes grammar. So if the grammar is about ,questions with do and does,we can see the use of these questions in the conversation that has come before .So what is your strategy? do you leave the conversation for the time being, and go to teaching grammar and come back to conversation later on? OR you just go with the flow of the book, thinking it s all about fluency?
thanks in advance | 17 Sep 2010

							| in modern school books, language activities (conversation, listening, reading...) are always before grammar, because to understand grammar you need to see how it works first. it s better to deduce the grammar rules from sentences you already used ex: 5 questions are written => look at the questions above, what is the word order in these questions? => the word order is ... => what can you conclude? => you need an auxiliary or a modal before the suject...
 see what I mean?
but of course, after your pupils have studied the rules, you need to find an activity where they can use the new rules they learnt!
 have a nice day

							| IMHO, one should always teach grammar within context, and better yet if sts discover how it works, with your help , and then are able to apply what they ve learnt to their everyday lives, they grasp it better that way ! | 17 Sep 2010
