							| Miss, Mrs. & Mr.???
 |
							| Hi,   Can you tell me if we can use Miss, Mrs. & Mr. with  first names or only with family names??   I am confused because I know we can use titles with both first and family names, but I ve just read that we should use Miss, Mrs. & Mr with family names only ??!!   Right ??     Thanks ,     | 25 Sep 2010

							| For formal use, these titles are used only with family names. Many children here, especially in the South, are taught to call adult family friends Miss Mary (usually Miss for married or unmarried women in this case) or Mr. Tom, but this is informal.
Also note that Mr. and Mrs. are abbreviations, so they use a period. Miss and Ms are not abbreviations, so there is no period after them.
