The department of Mathematics is slightly more formal than the Maths department (and takes longer to say).
...which reminds me: we used to call the Geography department �the Colouring-in department �. |

You can also say The Math department. I never said it in plural.

Americans shorten "mathematics" to math and British, Aussie, Kiwis say maths.
