(if I am?) 2) Do you mind if I shall borrow your dictionary? (if I borrow?) 3) The food spoil if the fridge is turned off. (The food will spoil?) 4) Will they read this magazine if I could leave it. (if I leave?) 5) The ground gets wet if it can rains. (the ground will get? and do we need can in this sentence?) Thanks! | 17 Nov 2010

							| Hello Alyona,   First conditional : If + present , ... so    you have to say:   1- Don t wait for me if I am late 2 ... if I borrow 4- ... if I leave 5- if it rains   On exercises 3 and 5 you need the future   3 - The food will spoil 5- The ground will get wet   The rule is: if + present , future                             or you can invert the sentences and                      future + if + present   Sometimes you can substitute the future for imperative | 17 Nov 2010

							| Hi, Alyona! Here s what I think:

 1) Don t wait for me if I am late. (1st conditional)
 2) Do you mind if I borrow your dictionary? (Although I d rather use the 2nd conditional in this case: Would you mind if I borrowed your dictionary? - I think it sounds more polite)
 3) The food will spoil if the fridge is turned off. (1st conditional)
 4) Will they read this magazine if I leave it? (1st conditional)
 5) The ground gets wet if it rains. (zero conditional - general truth: If + Present Simple, Present Simple), but you can also say The ground will get wet if it rains.

 Hope I ve helped!

 Cheers
