							| Do you guys teach grammar? Do you teach it explicitly?

Here are my views about including grammar in the EFL/ESL classroom
 What are yours?
Happy new year to you all.
 Yours in education,

							| As for me, I teach grammar even to my evening classes of low-elementaty and upper-elementary students (they are 7-9 year olds). I give them a very short explanation with some examples on the board or with flash-cards, and then I begin playing games with them to practice the rule I ve just explained. Sometimes, I also do some chants with them. For example: "I can swim well.
 I can swim well.
 Can you swim well?
 Yes, I can/No, I can t.
 ..."
All the games are for points, at the end of the lesson we count their points and declare the winner, who gets a sticker. They have to keep them in their binders, because they get a small prize when they collect 10 stickers.

In general, I believe that grammar should be taught to all ages, but we have to look for cool, amusing ways to do it. I m always trying to create games and activities for my teen-students and even for adults. For example: they have to listen to a joke on www.manythings.org, then we dicuss grammar used in that joke, and then they have to tell it to me. Adults like telling jokes very much. But that depends on how big your class is. I work with very small groups of 4-5 kids or teach privately...

Hope I was able to help.

 have a great day!

							| I have always taught grammar together with a text or a song. This year I have tried a new way to teach my 8 year old grandson. We read a text , learn new vocabulary, play games and sing. Of course the grammar is there  but I don t explain the grammar points. After training vocabulary and making questions about the text, he writes a text similar to the one we had read. I taught him French and English and I must say it has been a big success so far. It is true that this is a private class, I don t know if it could work in a big class, but I m really happy with the result.   A happy New Year to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | I always teach grammar. However I have lots of difficulties designing communicative grammar worsheets in an EFL context for intermediate students. I live in Senegal (WEST AFRICA) in a resource-challenged area. Would you please help me in sending me worsheets or suggesting me sites where I can download exercises with no contribution or publication required? I will be very thankful to you. Yours, sincerly. | 29 Dec 2010
