							| some, most ?
 |
							| Hello nice people,
I am having some problems understanding the difference between

some students - some of the students
most students - most of the students

When and why do we use each variant?

 Cheers

							| Thank you both for answering but what I don t get is the difference between some students and some of the students. I have to teach it according to the course programme, so I assume there is a difference.

							| some and some of the.. have the same meaning The only tiny difference I could imagine is that "some of the.." refers to a specific group of students and "some..."is more general.   Douglas | 16 Jan 2011

							| Hi Baiba
I m not sure but perhaps we use some/most students when we are talking about students in general while some/most of the students may refer to a particular group of students. Just an idea though... I d like to hear some other opinions as well.

							| Hi Douglas and Serene,
I had the same vague notion but let s look at these phrases

Some students in my class .....
Some of the students in my class ....

Let s assume "my class" is a specific group but I can still use both variants. Do you think there is NO difference at all?

							| Well, in that case I think that when you are talking about a specific group maybe both are correct. However, if you are talking generally, you can t say some of the students, e.g Some students (in general) never do their homework. Some of the students never do their homework (generally) doesn t sound very good to me. But again I m not sure.
Sorry I can t be of much help!
