							| Native speakers, please help
 |
							| Doesn t the question "What did the man feel at the end of the story?" imply a noun as the answer (a short answer is required in the task) e.g. embarrassment, shame. And if the answer be an adjective/pp (ashamed and confused), shouldn t the question start with "How"? I d appreciate your reply. Sophia | 13 Apr 2011

							| Yes, that sounds correct.   Clarification:   What did the man feel?  He felt shame and confusion.  (what calls for a noun)   How did the man feel?  He felt ashamed and confused (How calls for an adjective)   --The question is simple past so you can (should?) answer in simple past.   --This said, many native speakers dont always follow this rule. | 13 Apr 2011

							| Technically you are quite correct, but as both How & What questions could be answered with the same phrase it would be best to stipulate what was required (noun or adjective) to avoid confusion. I think even native speakers could overlook the difference in these typical comprehension questions.   What did the man feel at the end of the story? He felt that his effort had been worthwhile.    How did the man feel at the end of the story? He felt that his effort had been worthwhile.    What do others think?    | 13 Apr 2011

							| Thanks guys for helping me out. @ Marion: As I said the task requires a short answer i.e. 2words or a wordcombination, not a sentence. Sophia | 13 Apr 2011

							| I agree with douglas. Although apodo is correct too if a full sentence was required as an answer.
