							| Clarification about the usage of "as" and "so"
 |
							| I need some clarifications about their usage of "as" and "so".  Your help is much appreciated. "as" - shows reason e.g (1) As I was very tired, I went to sleep.   "so" - shows result e.g (2) It is raining, so we cancel the picnic.   Question - Can we rephrase the sentences as follows:- e.g. (1) using "so" - I was very tired, so I went to sleep. e.g. (2) using "as" - As it is raining, we cancel the picnic. | 4 Jun 2011

							| Yes, we can rephrase the sentences as you suggest. Incidentally, we cancel the picnic doesn t really work.  I think you need to use we re cancelling the picnic . | 4 Jun 2011

							| You just stick to " we cancel the picnic" because you have already used present continuous tense in the previous sentence " as it is raining", which automatically sets the next sentence to be in simple present.

							| @ sirhaj - we cancel the picnic is incorrect. The simple present verb cannot be used here.   It must be As it is raining, we cancelled the picnic. As it is raining, we will cancel the picnic. As it is raining, we are cancelling the picnic.     | 5 Jun 2011

							| as is used with the cause and so before  the result or effect. therefore a sentence with as when expressing cause can be paraphrased using so. the difference is in the importance of sentences. with  as the two sentences are not equally important whereas with so they are equal in rank | 5 Jun 2011
