 |
							| Hi, everyone! I feel rather confused about the use of "any" and cannot decide which is correct, A or B in the following:

Shanghai is larger than ________ city in India.
 A. any other                    B. any

So could any of you good colleague help me, please? Thanks a lot.

							| B. is correct. ANY city in India, of all the cities that exist there.

"A. any other" - would only be possible if you were dicussing other cities in CHINA.
Shanghai is larger than any OTHER city in China, since Shanghai is also in China.

i hope this helps make the difference clear.

							| If the nouns compared are from same category any other is used. If the comparison is between the nouns from different categories, like in your question, any is used. Examples are in reply by loopdeloup | 21 Aug 2011
