							| take a sleep

							| Hi,   I m not sure about the use of "take a sleep" and "have a sleep". What is the difference between the two phrases? Are they both correct?   Thanks for your help! Chiara | 25 Aug 2011

							| Hi Chiara   No, they are not correct.   When you are overtired you can say  get some sleep. I need to get some sleep.  Or just, I need some sleep. Or, you can advise someone who is overtired you need to get some sleep or you need some sleep.   However, if you are a litle sleepy and just want a short sleep during the day you can say take/have a nap.  Im going to take/have a nap.  Some people will say cat-nap.   If you are already in bed and your partner is talking and you want to sleep you can say  Im going to sleep now.      Cheers   Jayho   P.S.  For Mariannina, downunder we sometimes call this shut-eye  but I think this is not exclusive to the bottom of the world                | 25 Aug 2011

							| Thanks a lot!    Which word would you use to fill in this gap then?   a- "We have breakfast at 11 on Sundays" b- "Brilliant! So I can--------------a nice long sleep"   I had thought I could use Have or Take, but they did not sound completely right to me, that s why I was asking about their use in my previous post. However, I cannot find an alternative. Thanks again!   Chiara         | 25 Aug 2011

							| have   The person is already in bed so that means they can sleep late/sleep in.  They can have a nice long sleep.   We use had/have to refer to how we sleep or how we will sleep.   I had a good/bad night s sleep  (some will say I had a good sleep) I m looking foward to (having) a good night s sleep     Cheers   Jayho   | 25 Aug 2011

							| Good stuff everyone   Yes, we also do say 40 winks too but I think getting some ZZZs is US.  I know it but don t hear it here.   Well, I m off to get some shut-eye now. | 26 Aug 2011
