the Smurfs : Belgium by Peyo.
Tintin and Milou : Belgium (I don �t remember who are the authors) - based on historical background.
Obelix and Asterix : France by Goscinny and Uderzo - based on historical background
Boule and Bill : France by Roba.
Calimero : Italy (I can �t remember who drew it).
Our famous US Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck by Disney.
The British Black and Mortimer.
The US Spiderman and Batman, Wonderwoman - 3 different super heroes.
Here are the first ones.

You could try Japanese comic characters, there are many of them and they are the pioneers of the "Anime culture" that started from Japan and it spread worldwide. The comics famously known as "Manga".
Son Goku ( Dragon Ball), Sailor Moon, Doraemon, Astro Boy, Pikachu, Naruto and many more.
