							| Back home a potluck dinner was a dinner where each guest brought a different dish of food and everybody shared everything (buffet style).  We used this quite often with community events (clubs, etc.)   Douglas | 21 Nov 2011

							| Notice that Douglas s answer is the second definition from Dora s link. In my opinion, the first definition is better written as two words  - "pot luck". A potluck dinner is also called a covered dish dinner or a pitch-in dinner. It s also very common with churches. My international folk-dance group used to have a monthly potluck dinner, and we learned that it s best to have an idea of what s coming, because one month everyone brought a dessert! | You can use it like this: We are going out for dinner, but we haven t made a reservation. We are just going to take pot luck.  = we will eat wherever we can.   And it doesn t always have to be about food   We are going on holidays. We haven t booked a hotel. We are going to take pot luck.   | 22 Nov 2011

							| I would just say Thanks for all the examples .   I use eg. to mean for example .  pronounced as the letters E  G  -not many people know the Latin words. ;-)   People eat many different grains, eg. rice, oats, wheat and corn. | 22 Nov 2011
