							| Reward has a passive meaning. For example, your efforts can be rewarded.
award and prize has a similar meaning. The sense we feel when we use them is important which is difficult to teach:)

							| You can win a prize in a lottery or a competition, anyone can win a prize, it s quite arbitrary. You win an award for something special that you ve done - top of the class, best swimmer etc. There is a also a public aspect to it, there may be an awards ceremony, or an awards assembly. You get a reward for helping out, or doing something for someone, there is a quid pro quo element and it can be private e.g. you give your dog a biscuit for giving his paw - that is his reward.

							| Hmm..   An award is given to you by someone else--they determine for themselves that you deserve it for whatever reason.   A prize is something you win, normally it is the result of chance, or some kind of random selection   A reward is something giving to you as "payment" for soemthign you have done   This is not 100% accurate, but I think it helps to clarify some of the subtle differences.   Douglas | 17 Feb 2012
