"I died at 4. Since then I have been a fare-dodger. A gleaner of time."

I wonder where you got this from?
So, he (or she) died at 4, but is still a traveller - in a metaphorical sense - maybe a ghost, just still going round but not participating, not paying any dues, not really giving anything. He �s just gleaning extra time, trying to squeeze out a bit of extra time that he �s not entitled to.
A very interesting sentence!
