"Mean" as a singular noun means the "average." For example, "The mean of 25, 84, and 62 is 57."

To refer to transportation, yes, use "means." "My usual means of transportation to school is a car. Other means of transportation include the bus, a bicycle, or on foot." I know that this usage is counter-intuitive, but it is correct.
