							| a question
 |
							| I ve got a question concerning the name of one action in English. Imagine that you have a pillow and a pillow case - so you put on a pillow case on a pillow, right?   What about a quilt (duvet/ comforter). do we put on a quilt case on a quilt? By quilt case I mean a cloth cover for a it.    What do you call it? | 23 May 2012

							| HI there, based on South African English, we would not put a cover on a quilt, as it is an article that is meant to be shown in its own beauty (usually they are hand- stitched!)  A comforter is also a finished item, with no need for a cover. It is sometimes also called a "bedspread" and is meant to be put on the bed over other bedding layers.  A duvet, on the other hand, has a "duvet cover" as it is not a "finished" article and is meant to give the owner the chance of changing colours and patterns with different covers.
Not sure if this helps! Best regards Carole | 23 May 2012

							| Yes, this is what I meant Vincenza! As there are differences between a quilt/ duvet - and the latter is not a finished item and is put in a removable duvet cover that can be laundered. If there is a need for getting a duvet cover laundered we simply remove it and then put it on. Thank you for your help! | 23 May 2012

							| In the US, at least, there is a big difference between a comforter and a bedspread. A bedspread is a decorative item that is removed before going to bed (usually), while a comforter is a thick covering that is used for warmth while sleeping. It s thicker and warmer than a blanket, and is often filled with down or other feathers.   Bruce | 23 May 2012

							| In the US we call it a duvet cover or comforter cover.  It is removable and washable.  A quilt is a decorative cover in itself, and therefore is not covered up by anything else. | 23 May 2012
