According to George Yule, the so called colletive nouns can be seen either as plural or singular nouns, depending on ther speaker �s perspective. You can have a noun being treated as both collective and singular in the same sentence:The family HAS decided THEY can �t afford a big wedding. The audience WAS cheering and clapping THEIR hands.

yes : I knew the rule of collective nouns; I teach them like this;
But Today I have found in a CAE book that police is followed only by plural verbs; I am confused...
