							| I think the problem is that the preposition  �at � belongs with  �night �, it makes a stock phrase - at night,  in the same way as in the morning, in the afternoon etc.   Late can be added to  each of these to be Late at night, late in the morning, late in the afternoon.      |  28 Aug 2012

							| Ibululu, you are marvellous.   I explained it that way - at night, in the evening - but my pupil kept saying why, why, why because late is an adjective . I could not locate any formal reference to an explanation.  I am happy to see that everyone likes this explanation because that is what I used and I used Paul Simon �s song Late in the evening as the example of how to remember it. |  28 Aug 2012
