							| Grammar question
 |
							| Hi, teachers!

Need  your help! Which sentence is correct:
 a. Our sales figures nearly doubled last year. b. Our sales figures nearly doubled  over the last year.

I know that letter a is correct, but how about letter b? Is it incorrect? why?

 Thanks!

							| They are both correct (grammatically), but mean different things. The word "over" can be substituted with the word "during" in some cases, like this one, and that will make it easier to see the difference. Also, Sentence A sounds like you re talking about 2011 (last year) while sentence B COULD mean that (and SOUNDS like) you re talking about the past 12 months (October 2011 to October 2012). I know it s not a technical answer, but I m trying to let you know what it would sound like to a native. Hope it helps! Carlos from Mexico   | 10 Oct 2012

							| Carlos is exactly right, and it sounds technical enough to me.   Bruce | 11 Oct 2012
