When we talk about something that we often did in the past we can use either used to or would. For example When I was a child I used to (or would) go to the park every day. But when we talk about something that is a state not action we can �t use would. For example: When I was a child we used to �(NOT would) have a big garden.

Actually, "would" needs an establishing time period. You can �t say simply, "I would play basketball on Saturdays", although you can say, "I used to play basketball on Saturdays". You can say, "When I was in college, I would play basketball on Saturdays" or "Before I was married, I would party every weekend". (or "I used to play basketball", "I used to party")
