							| verbs with merry-go-round
 |
							| Hello, everybody! I am at a loss, which verb goes well with merry-go-round. Is it possible to say I rode merry-go-round yesterday? What about the swings? Is the only variant "I swang"? | 3 Feb 2009

							| As a Canadian, I would probably say `You can get on the merry go round and then you are playing on the merry go round and then after you say to your friend...I went on the merry go round...`   I have never heard ride/rode the merry go round but it`s possible other folks from other places say that.     For swings, I would also say I went on the swing, have a go on the swing, maybe play on the swing. It has been awhile since I used these words though. Perhaps someone has english speaking children they can ask for more current usage : )  | 3 Feb 2009

							| I think you would say "I went on the merry-go-round yesterday." The same for swingy. "I went on the swing." or " I played on the swings" Today you use the verb swing as a regular past - swing, swinged, but the third form (better to understand than past participle), is swung. Hope this helps. | 3 Feb 2009

							| It also depends on what you are talking about. Is it the  merry-go-round that kids play on or
the carousel with horses and music?

the one in a childs playground you play on.
the carousel with horses you go on, ride on, went on.

re swings - I was swinging on the swings yesterday.
I took a ride on the carousel yesterday
I played on the merry-go-round yesterday.

							| I always grew up (US west coast) using ride/rode on the merry-go-round or we would play on it.   Douglas | 3 Feb 2009

							| When you have a similar problem, and you need a quick help check this site::        This is the The British National Corpus (BNC) which is a 100 million word collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources.   Here you type the word (mery-go-round) and you get examples of the usage of this word.   Here you can find this example:   "we only have to go on the merry-go-round once"   Judy | 3 Feb 2009

							| Thank you very much, dear friends! I am teaching playground vocabulary to Russian kids tomorrow and I want to use precise word combinations. According to your explanations Id rather take play on the merry-go-round and I think it will be appropriate. Judy, thanks for the site - its great!!! Lots of examples - quotations from respected authors. But on the other hand its very pleasant to turn to collegues all over the world for help and receive an immediate answer ! Thank you very much for your messages. You are very helpful, Naddya | 3 Feb 2009
