Hi, would you help me with this topic?

I spent hours searching but I failed to find information I need.

In my country we have many mountains and (naturally) valleys.

So We go hiking in the mountains and go camping in the valleys.

(and not every valley connected to the river.)

Q: What do you do in your free time?

A1: I go hiking in a mountain, the mountain, the mountains. (not specific mountain)

A2: I go camping in a valley, the valley, the valleys.(not specific valley)

1. Are those three used interchangeably or which is the best to use?

2. Do you actually go camping in the valleys? (not a campsite)

Or do you more often go camping by the river in your country?

I hike in the mountains. "I go camping in valleys" isn �t quite natural. I �d probably say, "I like to camp in valleys" or "in the valleys". Bruce

I am not a native speaker so I don �t really know how natural it is but I �ve heard people say �I went hiking in the mountains �

I could not any example with mountain in my dictionaries but I found these sentences.

[V prep/adv] You could hike through the Fish River Canyon - it �s entirely up to you...

[V n] We plan to hike the Samaria Gorge. [Also V]

We went for a hike through the woods on Sunday.

I came to the mountains because this is where I grew up – hiking in the hills.

Part of the fun of hiking in the woods is the treat of coming across a bush chock-full of wild berries.

We �re going hiking in the Lake District next weekend.

A1: I go hiking in the mountains. (only this is correct)

A2: All three sound odd. I would suggest: I camp somewhere in the valley/s.

It doesn �t always make sense to combine

activity + pre+place like math formulas, I hope though,

so please understand my additional questions here.

Is it the matter of valley ? I mean,

-go camping at the beach / at the campsite/ in the mountains - are all unnatural?

So like you said, go camping should be replaced with I camp/ like to camp

when I use preposition+place?

Actually when I get one answer tens of questions come to mind but I rather stop here.

I guess isa2 is a native speaker. I think "I go hiking in the mountains." is the most natural one too.

Longman says "go camping to visit an area, especially the mountains or a forest, and stay in a tent: " and it gives this example

We went camping in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Other examples

They went camping in the wilds. (Collins)

We camped on one of the lower slopes of the mountain.

We pitched/set up camp (= put up our tents) by the lakeside. (Cambridge)

I could not find any example with valley. So I guess "we camped somewhere in the valley/s or we camped near the valley" sounds more natural.

Still I suggest you use "http://forum.wordreference.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6" There �ll a lot more native speakers to answer your questions there.
