							| You carry something in your hands, on your back, on your shoulder, or on your head (if your balance is a lot better than mine!) I think it �s because the hands can act as a container, unlike the other body parts I mentioned. Hope this helps! |  21 Jan 2015

							| However we can use "on your hands" in a metaphorical sense - "He �s got a lot on his hands/on his plate" means that he is very busy and has a lot to do at the moment. It suggests that he is close to being overwhelmed. "I have a lot of time on my hands" means that I have a lot of free time, almost too much. |  22 Jan 2015
