Hi, I wonder if you can help. I wondered what books people recommend/use with their ESL students. I teach 1st Grade ESL and currently use the BackPack books but feel they lack detailed explanations of grammar (A poster is not enough for my beginners) ... what books do you use? Any recommendations gratefully received! Ideally books that include student books and workbooks with CD �s. Thanks in advance! Sal x |

Sorry 1st grade is age 6. So very young, but we have students up to 11 years old in the elementary school. Ideally ESL books that cater to a younger age group. Hope this helps!

We are talking about really small children here, so Headway will be completely inapropriate (it �s a course for late teens/adults). I �m not sure what you �d like the book to include makes sense for these children, because at such young age, according to language development specialists, kids don �t operate in terms of a grammatical system, they rather learn its chunks. This is the method most of the books are constructed on, especially that 6 is the age that kids start school in Belgium, don �t they? So they barely read and write? Teching them to respond to simple questions, songs, TPR would probably be a much better idea. At this age they wouldn �t have a concept of grammar in their native language. |

Incredible English is a very nice course book from Oxford University Press. It �s starts at level one and goes all the way to level 5, I think, we use Incredible English 1 on our first graders and I am very happy with it. But as mentioned above, the grammar thing is best left out at this age :-) |
