							| Hello, dear colleagues! I have been playing these map quizzes online and something is puzzling me:  The instruction says either Click on (Nigeria) OR Click on THE Gambia/Congo/Central African Republic.     I kind of understand the last one, but not  "the Gambia" or "the Congo".  Why would that be? Thanks for your replies in advance.         | 3 Jan 2016

							| In UK English, "the" is used before: - countries which contain "Kingdom" or "Republic" in their names (the UK, the Czech Republic, the Central African Republic) - plural countries (the Philippines, the Bahamas, the UAE, the USA) - the Gambia and the Congo (I think this is because they are named after rivers).  | 4 Jan 2016
