Hi All, I have a question about a mistake that my students make very often. They tend to omit the subject and use the verb be for example they don!t say he is but they say just is and continue with a complement but there is another thing which I am not sure about. Is it possible to omit there in a sentence like: In both songs there is a lot of sarcasm and ironic joke irony the words in green are the ones I added. and the highlighted ones are the words written by my students. So my question is: Is it possible to omit there in this sentence? or is this version with my correction is better or more common in use? Thank you. |

No, because "in both songs" is a prepositional phrase, hence you need the subject "there" to make it the main clause of the sentence. I would also say you need to add a comma "In both songs,". |

I agree with Sharwong here. It isn�t correct to omit "there" even though students do it all the time. |
