							| Which of the following is the correct one ? a. She broke the watch which her dad gave it to her last week./ b. She broke the watch which her dad gave last week . Or if both are wrong whats the correct form?  The second question is : (A lot of the building is / are destroyed) Why ?  Thanks in advance  | 10 Apr 2020

							| I agree with L. habachs answer.   For the second one, "a lot" is singular, so it must be "is". A lot of the building is destroyed.   Bruce  | 10 Apr 2020

							| For the second one, isnt it because building is singular? A lot of the building is destroyed. (One partially destroyed building.) A lot of the buildings are destroyed. (Several destroyed buildings in a town.)  | 14 Apr 2020

							| FrauSue, It seems that way, but "a lot" is singular in the first, because it means the amount, and plural in the second, because it means the number. You could replace the first one with "much" (singular), and the second one with "many" (plural). In either case, "building" and "buildings" are not the subject of the sentence, so they dont determine the form of the verb. They are the object of the preposition "of".   Bruce  | 14 Apr 2020

							| Thanks, Bruce! Replacing with "much" and "many" is an excellent way of explaining it. I will now be able to teach my students better. Thanks for the tip! | 15 Apr 2020
