							| it depends on the letter is it a fortis like "p" "T" "k" then the s is pronounced "s"
 as in thanks, task , desk,  etc...

 but if the next letter is lenis like some vowels & some other consonants , it can occur before of after s
 s = z

 as in music, erase, husband, etc...

 But, there are many exceptions as in  "house" & many others

 there  are also some words that can be pronounced with s / z and the 2 pronunciations are correct as in "spouse"

							| words ending in -se sound /z/ and words ending in -ce sound /s/

 as regards plurals, those words that end with a voiced sound like /b, d, g/ have a /z/ sound that is also voiced. for example: /dogz/ for dogs

 and those words ending with an unvoiced sound live vowels sounds or /p, t, k/ have a /s/ sound, that is unvoiced. for example: caps, cups, cats, cakes,

 Is it as I m saying? Please, correct me if i m wrong..

							| Oh gee - I never realised that the differences between US and UK English went that deep.   I m an Australian and we say erase with a /z/.  We tend to follow UK English.   The Collins Cobuild Student Dictionary shows both pronuncaitions as acceptable yet the Australian dictionary only shows the /z/ pronunciation.   Miss Noor, I don t think there is a specific rule concerning their placement in the middle of words. | 26 Apr 2009
