							| because and as - help
 |
							| how can I explain the difference between because and as. like: I went to bed because I was tired - I went to bed as I was tired.

I know they are not always interchangeable but when aren t they? what s the difference?
 Thanks

							| Because is used when the focus is on the reason as the most important part of the sentence whereas as is used when the reason is already well known and/or  less important.  For this reason, because clauses come at the end of sentences; as clauses more often come at the beginning. e.g.As | 27 May 2009

							| Sorry - was leaning on keyboard!   e.g. As I m really tired, I m going to bed now (focus on I m going to bed now). as opposed to:  I m going to bed now because I m really tired (focus on I m really tired). Any help? | 27 May 2009

							| Ballycastle1 s answer looks right to me.
I d just like to add that I think "as" may be more common in the UK than in the US. | 27 May 2009
