If you are going to teach about Hans Christian Andersen, you really ought to read the original.  Don �t forget that Disney �s version totally changed the "unhappy" ending.
Like Dickens, Andersen was a critical of the society where he lived. Many of his tales have a moral and therefore don �t end happily ever after.
