A good way is to "build up" a listening...
First, ask students to listen and write down as many words as they can, they don �t have to be full sentences, just words. This will help to give them an idea of the context and also means that weaker students will be able to participate.
Secondly, give students phrases with words missing, and ask them to put the sentences in the correct order - not to worry about the gaps at the moment. They can compare with their partners. Again, this is a good activity for mixed-ability classes.
Finally, ask them to listen again and complete the sentences - you may need to play the recording twice. Stronger students may be able to complete the text entirely.
Another type of activity can be done when working with the text and recording at the same time. Divide the class into teams and explain that you are going to play the recording and pause it and they have to say the end of the sentence. Skip forward and backwards on the CD and play part of the recording, then pause it and students have to look through the text to see what comes next.
ANd finally, kids love songs, so do gapfills / circle the correct word / cross out the extra word activities.
