Telephoning
Here is an illustrated list of expressions to use when making telephone calls or receiving telephone calls. Both British and American expressions are listed. This was inspired by an old list from the CRAPEL at the University of Nancy II in Nancy, France, but was extensively revised and reformatted.

Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh
This funny song by Allen Sherman about an unhappy boy writing a letter to his parents from summer camp is timeless. There are several types of exercises here, a vocabulary matching exercise, listening comprehension, discussion, etc. I used the Mistral font for the title, but this can be changed so that everything fits onto 2 pages.

Presentation Feedback Cards
These cards are for peer feedback to classmates who are giving presentations. Print out the cards, preferably onto colored paper (a different color for each of the 5 cards), and cut them up. (Laminate them if you wish.) Each speaker then gives out 1 card to each member of the audience (including a card for the teacher!) according to the type of fee...

Derek the Human iPod
"60 Minutes" has a fabulous story on Derek Paravicini, the human iPod (so called because once he hears a song, he can play it perfectly), who is a musical genius, but at the same time blind and severely retarded. (He cannot count to three or button his shirt.) You can view the 14-minute video here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/07/27/60mi...

The English Patient - Discussion
"The English Patient" is a beautiful film that won 9 Academy Awards. Here is a worksheet with 2 exercises to follow watching the film. In the first one, they match different flaws with the principal characters, and in the second they choose 8-12 questions about the film to discuss. (Not recommended for students under 17.)

Odd Man Out
Lots of discussion and FUN with this logic exercise! Students work in small groups to find which of the items in each group doesnt belong there. But, in fact, several possibilities exist. In a few instances, every one of the items could be an odd man out.

Ideal Job
I am always amazed at how much discussion this activity generates. Students have to classify elements for a rewarding and satisfying job into 4 categories (essential, desirable, unimportant, and undesirable), and then discuss their choices in small groups. Please note that this exercise was NOT stolen from "The Standby Book." (I am the author...

Thank You, Mam - Questions
Langston Hughes is best known as a poet of the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s, but here are some discussion questions to a fabulous short story written in the 1950s. As a follow-up (homework, for example), I ask students to write a letter from the boy to the woman 10 or 15 years after the story takes place. Send me a private message with yo...

Telephone Encounter
Lots of discussion in pairs, threes, or fours about our use of the telephone. You may wish to change the font so that everything fits onto one page. (I used Baskerville.)

Spin City - Miracle Near 34th Street
Considered one of the funniest moments ever on American TV ("TV Guide"), this is Christmas humor at its blackest. Santa not only loses his job, but gets into a fight, gets stuck in a chimney, and then dies, while the mayor sets the citys Christmas tree on fire, all to prove to a young boy that Santa really exists. I used the font Matrix Bold for t...
